About St Mary the Virgin church, Wortham
St Mary's Church in Wortham, Suffolk was built in the 12th century and is a glorious example of a medieval parish church. Set in a gentle valley amidst fields and streams, it is quintessentially old England.
The church has an ancient round tower, now roofless, and built of flint. It is the largest diameter round church tower in England and is 9 metres across.
Inside the church is light and beautiful with medieval stone carvings, Victorian pews, and a mixture of medieval and later stained glass in the windows. The villagers have recently raised money to put in a glorious new stained glass window to celebrate 100 years of our diocese. It has been designed and created by Deborah Lowe, a stained glass artist from Lancashire. The window is full of natural history and wildlife - an apt subject for this beautiful corner of Suffolk.
The church is showing its age and this year large cracks have been discovered in the south aisle. The village only has a population of about 600 people so it is a hard task for the villagers to raise the funds to restore the church. Regular events are organised by the Friends to raise the profile of this beautiful building and help to raise funds for the urgently needed repairs.
Friends of Wortham Church is the charity that raises money for the church restoration. If you would like to donate to Wortham Church, please email using the Contact form at the top.
